Colmer’s Hill

That lone tree perched on top of a grassy mound is properly iconic - you've probably seen Colmer's Hill in every Dorset tourism brochure without realising it. The solitary ash tree crowning this distinctive conical hill makes for one of the most photographed spots on the Jurassic Coast.

Climbing up takes about 15 minutes from the car park near Symondsbury, just outside Bridport. The path's well-maintained but gets muddy after rain. Once you reach the top, the views sweep across West Bay and the coast - though honestly, the hill itself is more striking than the vista from it.

Families with young kids will find it manageable, though toddlers might need carrying on the steeper bits. Dog walkers love it here, and it's free to visit any time. Early morning or late afternoon gives the best light for photos, when that famous tree really stands out against the sky.

The walk down takes half the time, so budget an hour total including photo stops. It's an easy add-on if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Bridport - Highlands End and Golden Cap are both under two miles away. Worth combining with a trip to West Bay for fish and chips afterwards, though the hill itself is better for a quick leg-stretch than a full day out.
