Collessie Man

Out on the Fife farmland between Cupar and the rolling countryside, there's a Bronze Age standing stone that most people drive right past without noticing. The Collessie Man - or Newton of Collessie Stone if you want to be proper about it - is basically a solitary chunk of rock that's been standing in this spot for something like four thousand years. Not much to look at, frankly. It's roughly shoulder-height, weathered grey, and surrounded by fields. But that's rather the point.

You'll get the most from it if you're the sort who finds Bronze Age monuments genuinely interesting rather than just ticking off a list. It's free, accessible whenever you fancy it, and the real appeal is thinking about who put it here and why - ritual marker, boundary stone, burial monument. No one's entirely sure. The walk out here from Cupar is pleasant enough, especially if the light's right, but this isn't a full afternoon's outing. Twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're taking photographs.

If you're based at one of the local holiday parks - Annsmuir or Snugs at Logie Farm are both handy - it works as a proper local curiosity to explore, the kind of thing that makes a countryside break feel less touristy. The Rings camping site's a bit further out but worth knowing about. Combine it with a wander through the Fife countryside rather than treating it as a destination in itself.
