Collach Park

You'll find Collach Park sitting quietly in the Aberdeenshire landscape, a proper nature reserve that rewards a bit of effort. It's the sort of place where you might actually spot something - red squirrels, roe deer, various birds if you're patient enough to stand still. The woodland walks are decent without being strenuous, following paths through mixed forest with the odd clearing that opens up views across the valley.

Forres is your nearest town, which means you've got somewhere to grab a coffee before or after if needed. The reserve works best for walkers who like a bit of wildlife watching rather than those wanting obvious attractions or marked trails with interpretive boards. Bring binoculars if you've got them. Kids will enjoy it if they're the sort who get a kick out of spotting animals, but it's not going to have them entertained for hours - maybe ninety minutes if conditions are good and you're lucky.

Timing matters here - early morning or late afternoon gives you the best chance of seeing wildlife. The reserve is free to access, which is the one proper saving grace when you're weighing up whether to bother.
