Cole Hill Wood

Dense woodland spreads across the hillside just inland from Weymouth, offering proper forest walks without the coastal crowds. Cole Hill Wood is one of those spots that doesn't shout about itself - no visitor centre, no marked trails, just good old-fashioned rambling through mixed woodland.

Walkers and dog owners will get the most from this place. The paths wind through beech and oak, with enough inclines to make you feel you've earned your pub lunch afterwards. Families with younger children might find it a bit challenging - this isn't manicured parkland but genuine countryside that demands sturdy footwear.

Being free to explore (as far as I could tell), it makes a lovely contrast to a seaside holiday. After days of beach activities at nearby Haven Weymouth Bay or Seaview holiday parks, the cool shade of the trees feels particularly welcome. The wood sits well positioned for those staying at Warmwell Holiday Park too - close enough for an afternoon escape but far enough to feel properly away from it all.

Allow a couple of hours for a decent walk, though you could easily spend longer if you're the type who stops to identify every bird call. Best avoided after heavy rain when the paths turn properly muddy.
