Coldmartin Loughs

Two shallow lakes sit quietly in the Northumberland hills just outside Wooler, and they're the sort of place you either stumble upon or deliberately seek out - there's no middle ground. Coldmartin Loughs offers something straightforward: a walk round the water, birdwatching that actually delivers, and views across moorland that don't require climbing a bloody mountain to appreciate.

The appeal here is understated. You're not looking at dramatic cliff faces or photogenic islands. What you get is a proper wetland habitat where you'll spot curlew, lapwing, and if you're patient, the odd heron. In spring and autumn the birdlife is particularly good. The walk itself is manageable - bog in places, muddy in others, so wellies aren't optional - and takes a couple of hours to do the loop without rushing.

It's best suited to walkers who actually know their birds or at least pretend to, and families after something gentle with a real-world educational angle rather than a visitor centre and a gift shop. Bring binoculars. Seriously.

Free to access, open year-round, though winter visits mean you'll have the place nearly to yourself. If you're staying at Riverside Wooler Holiday Park or Highburn House just down the road, this is the sort of local walk that justifies staying put rather than driving to the honeypots. Not Instagram-friendly, but proper good for a morning out.
