Cold Hiendley Reservoir

The water at Cold Hiendley sits dark and still, ringed by scrubby woodland that's seen better days but has a certain rough charm about it. It's a proper working reservoir - built back in the 1830s to supply water to the local collieries - and you won't find manicured paths or visitor centres here. What you get instead is something genuinely quiet, especially on weekday mornings when you might have the place nearly to yourself.

The walk around the perimeter takes roughly an hour at a steady pace, and it's the kind of route where you actually spot things: coots, herons, the occasional cormorant. Birdwatchers will find it worthwhile; casual walkers will find it unremarkable but pleasant enough. The landscape is pure West Yorkshire - industrial heritage meets countryside, with distant views towards Wakefield and the Pennine foothills beyond.

It's free to visit, and there's parking on the approach road, though facilities are minimal. Don't expect a café or toilets. Go early or late to avoid the fishing fraternity who use the water seriously. Kids will tolerate it for forty minutes before asking when you're heading back.

If you're based at Broadlands Farm Touring Caravan Site - genuinely excellent by all accounts - Cold Hiendley makes a decent stretch-the-legs detour. Nostell Priory Holiday Park is similarly close and gives you actual 'sights' to anchor a morning walk. The reservoir works better as an add-on than a destination in itself.
