Colchester's Roman Circus

The remains of a Roman circus on the outskirts of Colchester are easy to miss if you don't know where to look. What you're standing on is roughly 2,000 years of history - this was where chariots thundered around a track, where crowds roared, where the Roman military showed off their power to the local population. Now it's mostly grass, with faint earthworks marking where the spectator banks once rose.

You won't find a grand arena here. Instead, it's a quiet spot for people who actually care about Roman Britain rather than those after a photo opportunity. Archaeologists have mapped the outline fairly clearly, so if you're into that sort of detail, it's genuinely interesting to walk the perimeter and imagine the scale of it. History buffs will get the most from a visit, though families with older kids who aren't bored by "just ruins" will find it a decent stop between other attractions.

Allow maybe 30 to 45 minutes if you're reading the information boards and taking your time. Colchester itself has far more substantial Roman remains - the castle museum is proper worthwhile - so the circus works best as a supplementary stop. It's free to wander around, which helps. If you're staying at Swallows Field or one of the other local parks, it's a reasonable morning outing before heading into town proper.
