Coedydd Maentwrog National Nature Reserve

Walking through Coedydd Maentwrog feels like stepping into proper old-growth Wales. This National Nature Reserve sprawls across ancient woodland near Blaenau Ffestiniog, where you'll find yourself surrounded by oak, ash and birch rather than the slate quarries that dominate the town itself. The paths wind through dense forest, and on a quiet day you might spot woodland birds, red squirrels if you're lucky, and the occasional glimpse of native plants that thrive in this upland setting.

It's worth allowing a good two hours minimum if you want to explore properly - these aren't manicured trails, they're proper woodland walks with uneven ground and the occasional boggy section. The reserve appeals most to nature enthusiasts and walkers who actually want to see something wild, rather than those after a quick photo opportunity. Families with older kids who enjoy spotting wildlife will do well here; toddlers might struggle with the terrain.

There's no entrance fee and it's freely accessible, which is typical for Welsh nature reserves. The best time to visit is late spring through early autumn when the woodland is alive and you've got decent daylight. Winter can be muddy and claustrophobic under the trees.

The location works brilliantly if you're based at Llechwedd Glamping or Barcdy Caravan Park - both within five miles. You can combine it with a visit to Blaenau Ffestiniog's slate mines or the Ffestiniog Railway if you want a mixed day out. On its own though, it's a solid half-day woodland walk, not a destination in itself.
