Coed y Ddôl

The forest floor at Coed y Ddôl is thick with moss and the air smells properly green - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. This woodland sits just outside Rhyl, making it an easy escape from the caravan parks dotted along the coast, particularly if you're staying at The Beach or Plas Farm. The walking trails wind through dense tree cover, with streams running through in places and occasional clearings that catch the light beautifully.

It's the sort of forest that rewards a slow pace. Families with young kids will find it manageable for an hour or so - enough time to splash in the water, hunt for sticks, and let off steam without anyone getting fractious. But serious walkers will want longer here. The paths are well-trodden, not steep, and you won't feel rushed.

What you get out of it depends entirely on what you bring. It's not dramatic or famous. There are no waterfalls or viewpoints or anything Instagram-worthy. What it is, though, is real Welsh woodland - the sort of place locals use regularly and tourists often miss entirely. That's exactly why it's worth the detour from your park holiday. The beauty is in the texture of bark, the sound of water, the way the canopy filters the light. If you're after something quiet and genuine rather than packaged and pretty, this delivers. Allow at least two hours if you want to do it properly.
