Coed y Castell

Walk far enough into Coed y Castell and you'll forget the road exists at all. This forest sprawls across the Powys countryside near Caersws, a proper tangle of woodland trails where the canopy does a decent job of blocking out the world. The trees are dense enough that even on drizzly days - which is most days in Mid Wales - you don't feel completely sodden.

It's the sort of place walkers come to clear their heads rather than tick off a list of sights. There's no castle lurking at the end, despite what the name promises. Instead, you get woodland paths of varying difficulty, streams running through, and the occasional opening where you can actually see sky. Kids will enjoy it for maybe an hour before asking if there's anything else. History buffs should look elsewhere.

Free to access and open year-round, though winter mud can be punishing. Allow at least an hour for a proper walk, longer if you're not in a rush. The nearest proper car park requires a bit of local knowledge, so go prepared.

If you're staying at Meadow Springs Country and Leisure Park just 3.7 miles away, this makes a solid half-day outing to stretch your legs without driving far. Maesmawr Farm Resort, a touch further out at 6.2 miles, also uses it as an easy escape route. It's not a destination in itself, but rather the sort of place you discover when you're already in the area and need a forest walk that doesn't require hours of commitment.
