Coed Y Bwlch

The walk up Coed Y Bwlch rewards you with proper views across the Powys borderlands - nothing dramatic, but the sort of landscape that makes you understand why people settle in Mid Wales. It's a modest peak by any standard, the kind of hill you can knock out in an afternoon without needing crampons or a support team.

The approach takes you through mixed woodland, which feels a bit different from the open moorland you'd tackle on bigger peaks. On a damp day - and this is Wales, so assume damp - the trees drip and the path squelches underfoot. Worth bringing proper boots. The summit itself is more of a high point than a dramatic tor, so don't expect a trig point or a stone cairn to stand on; you'll know when you're at the top mainly because the ground stops going up.

This works best for walkers who like a gentle pull without the scrambling faff. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the walk itself more interesting than the destination. Llanymynech, the nearest town, sits about five miles south and gives you shops and a pub for afterwards.

Stay at one of the nearby parks - Tanat Holiday Park or Fairhaven if you want something with facilities - and use this as part of a broader walking loop around the area. Half a day's work, and the kind of hill that doesn't demand much but delivers a quiet sense of satisfaction.
