Coed Pen y Gribin

Walking into Coed Pen y Gribin feels like stepping into proper North Wales woodland - all mixed conifers and deciduous trees, with paths that wind through without being overly manicured. It's not a destination that shouts about itself, which is rather the appeal. You get genuine forest atmosphere rather than a theme-park version of nature.

The main draw here is straightforward: decent woodland trails for a couple of hours' walking, good for families who want their kids burning off energy without needing a massive expedition. The paths are manageable, though do wear proper shoes - this isn't a flat stroll. On a clear day there are decent views out towards Conwy and the surrounding valleys, and in autumn the colour is genuinely worth the detour.

This works brilliantly as part of a broader park holiday in the area. Rhyl sits just five miles away - hardly remote, but Coed Pen y Gribin gets you properly into the landscape rather than staying in seaside-resort mode. If you're based at Plas Farm Caravan & Lodge Park or The Beach Caravan Park, both within striking distance, this fills a morning nicely before heading back for lunch. It's not going to be a full-day commitment unless you're a keen forager or serious birder.

Free access, no visitor centre nonsense, just the forest itself. That's actually refreshing. Come in spring or autumn if you can - summer crowds are lighter and the light hits the trees properly.
