Coed Bwlch-y-gwynt

Dense woodland paths wind through this slice of Welsh forestland just outside Carmarthen, where ancient oak and birch create a proper canopy overhead. The name means 'forest of the windy pass' in Welsh, which gives you a fair idea of what to expect weather-wise even on supposedly calm days.

Walkers get the best deal here. Several unmarked trails snake through the trees, ranging from gentle strolls to more demanding climbs that'll get your heart rate up. The ground can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Families with younger children might find the terrain a bit challenging - there's nothing in the way of facilities or clear waymarking.

Birdwatchers do well here too. The mix of deciduous and coniferous trees attracts a decent variety of species, particularly in early morning when the forest comes alive with song. Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the dappled light filtering through the canopy, though you'll need to work for your shots.

Being just a short drive from several glamping sites like The Welsh Farm and Llain Farm, it makes for a good morning's adventure before heading back to base. Allow a couple of hours if you're planning to explore properly. The lack of crowds is half the appeal - you'll often have the place to yourself, which is increasingly rare these days.
