Cockshoot Broad

The water here is surprisingly still, ringed by reed beds that seem to stretch for miles. Cockshoot Broad is one of those Norfolk lakes that doesn't announce itself - you won't find crowds or gift shops, just a genuinely quiet spot where you can actually hear the reeds rustling. It's east of Great Yarmouth, tucked into the Broads landscape where the flatness of Norfolk feels almost meditative.

This is proper birdwatcher territory. The reed beds attract bitterns, marsh harriers, and water rails if you know when to look and have the patience to stand still. Walkers will appreciate the easy terrain - no hills to speak of - though paths can be muddy depending on the season. Families with young kids might find it a bit too static unless they're the type to bring binoculars and a field guide.

There's no formal visitor centre or cafe, which is either the appeal or the drawback depending on your outlook. It's free to access, and you can spend anywhere from half an hour to a full morning depending on whether you're serious about spotting birds or just after a walk and a change of scenery. The water itself is off-limits for swimming, but it's fine for observation.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Norfolk Broads Caravan and Motorhome Club is closest at 2.2 miles, or Clippesby Hall a bit further out - Cockshoot makes an easy morning outing before heading to busier attractions. It won't be the highlight of your holiday, but it's the kind of place that settles something in you.
