Cockscomb Hill

The walk up Cockscomb Hill rewards you with proper Winchester countryside views - nothing dramatic, but thoroughly pleasant on a clear day. It's a modest rise near Winchester that most people tackle as part of a longer ramble rather than a destination in itself, which is fair enough.

The summit gives you sight lines across Hampshire farmland and back towards the cathedral city. On a decent afternoon, you can see why locals regularly pop up here. The approach is straightforward enough, though the paths can get a bit muddy after rain - standard English downland stuff.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the sort of hill that makes sense if you're already exploring the Winchester area on foot rather than driving specifically to climb it. You're looking at maybe an hour round trip depending on your route, though you could easily stretch it into a longer circuit through the surrounding countryside.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Holden Farm's the standout with its five-star rating, about 4 miles away - Cockscomb fits nicely into a morning or afternoon walk without eating up your whole day. Beechen Glamping and Winchester Morn Hill Campsite are also close enough to make it convenient. It's unpretentious walking country, the kind of thing that justifies a week in Hampshire when you're not chasing famous viewpoints.
