Cockham Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a curated visitor attraction, Cockham Wood sits just outside Aylesford in Kent and feels like the kind of place locals know but tourists miss entirely. The forest floor is thick with beech and oak, the paths meander without too much fanfare, and on a quiet weekday morning you'll have the place almost to yourself.

It's straightforward stuff - woodland trails, fresh air, the occasional burst of birdsong that makes you forget you're only a few miles from the M20. Most people allow an hour or so to loop through without rushing, though you could stretch it to ninety minutes if you're in no hurry. The paths are generally well-trodden and not boggy, even after rain, which counts for something in the English countryside.

Families with young legs will find it manageable, though there's nothing here to detain kids for hours - it's pure walking, no playground or cafe. If you're staying at Haven Kent Coast Holiday Park over on the coast, Cockham Wood makes a decent half-day excursion inland - close enough for a quick escape but far enough to feel genuinely removed from the holiday park rhythm.
