Cocker Wood

The trees here are proper tall - towering Lancashire pines and broadleaf woodland that close in around you the moment you step off the path. Cocker Wood sits just outside Lancaster, and it's one of those forests where you can actually breathe, away from the tourist crowds at Morecambe Bay.

It's a straightforward woodland walk, nothing flashy. You get dappled light through the canopy, the occasional clearing where you can get your bearings, and enough variation in terrain to keep it interesting without being punishing. Dog walkers love it here - there's room to let them off, and the ground stays reasonably firm even after rain. Kids will find it engaging for a couple of hours; it's not so vast that they'll get bored, but big enough to feel like a proper adventure.

The main appeal is simplicity. No entrance fee, no gift shop, no visitor centre nonsense. Park up nearby, lace your boots, and crack on. Spring is lovely when the undergrowth comes alive, though autumn's your best bet for light and colour. Winter can be muddy, which honestly suits the place better than trying to keep things neat.

If you're based at Midwood Caravan Park or Pointer Farm Campsite - both solid choices in the area - this makes an easy morning or afternoon jaunt. It complements a broader Lancaster visit well without demanding much planning. Real woodland, the kind locals use, not the kind dressed up for visitors.
