The walk up Cock Law is a proper leg-stretcher, this 1,000-foot peak rising above the rolling farmland between Ayrshire and Renfrewshire. It's not a mountain - let's be clear about that - but the view from the top sweeps right across the Scottish Lowlands, and on a clear day you can pick out the Firth of Clyde away to the west.

The ascent takes around 45 minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and it's straightforward fell-walking rather than scrambling. You'll pass through rough grassland and the occasional boggy patch, so waterproof boots are sensible even when it looks dry. The summit itself is marked by a trig point, and there's proper satisfaction in reaching it - the kind of modest, achievable hill that keeps you coming back.

This one works best for walkers rather than younger kids, though teenagers with decent fitness won't struggle. You're looking at a two-to-three-hour morning outing including the return, which makes it ideal if you're basing yourself nearby - The Pods at Auchenhean is only five miles away and offers a comfortable spot to return to afterwards.

Worth the trip? Only if you're already in the area exploring Ayrshire. It won't be worth driving two hours out of your way, but as part of a wider walking week in the Lowlands, it's a solid half-day that gives you that clean, straightforward hill satisfaction.
