Cobbles Hill

The walk up Cobbles Hill from Hawes rewards you with proper fell views across Wensleydale. It's not a difficult climb, which means families can manage it without too much grumbling, but the effort pays off - on a clear day you're looking right across the valley floor below. The summit itself is modest, nothing dramatic, but that's sort of the point. You get genuine Yorkshire dales landscape without needing to be a serious hillwalker.

Allow roughly an hour to get up and down depending on fitness. Best done in the earlier part of the day when the light's decent and before afternoon mist rolls in. The path from Hawes is straightforward enough, though it can be boggy after rain so proper boots make sense. You won't need specialist gear or a guide.

It's ideal if you're camped at Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and want to stretch your legs properly without committing to an all-day expedition. Kids who've done a bit of walking will get something from it. If you're expecting dramatic peaks or dramatic vistas, you'll find it a bit underwhelming - it's intimate rather than spectacular. But for a solid half-morning's outing that leaves you somewhere proper to sit and breathe in the Wensleydale air, it does the job. The town of Hawes itself sits right beneath it, which makes logistics simple enough.
