Cobble Hey Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Preston, Cobble Hey Wood gives you that sense of getting away from it all without actually going anywhere. The forest floor is soft underfoot, the trees crowd in close, and on a grey Lancashire afternoon it feels genuinely peaceful. It's the kind of place where you can lose an hour without trying, wandering between the older oaks and tracking which paths lead where.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination attraction with visitor facilities or a cafe - it's just woodland, really - but that's precisely the appeal. Families with young kids might spend 45 minutes to an hour here before everyone gets restless; older kids and adults who actually enjoy being in a forest will find themselves staying longer. The paths are manageable and mostly flat, though they can be muddy after rain, so proper boots are worth bringing.

Free to access, as far as I can tell. No gates, no car park that I'm aware of, just a quiet woodland where locals come to clear their heads. If you're staying at Orchard Glamping or Claylands Caravan Park nearby, both within a couple of miles, it's a decent leg-stretch option. It won't be the highlight of your trip, but if you're after a gentle forest walk without the crowds or the facilities, Cobble Hey Wood does exactly what it says on the tin.
