Coatham Mundeville medieval village

Walking across the fields near Shildon, you'll find almost nothing obvious - just lumps and bumps in the grass that most people would walk straight past. Coatham Mundeville is what archaeologists call a deserted medieval village, and that's exactly what you get: earthworks, ridge-and-furrow patterns, and the ghostly outline of where people actually lived 600 years ago.

The site itself requires imagination. There are no standing structures, no visitor centre, no café - just the landscape telling its story if you know how to read it. You can make out the layout of houses, streets, even fish ponds. It's brilliant for anyone into medieval history or archaeology, and walkers will appreciate the quiet countryside around Shildon. Kids might find it a bit abstract unless they're already interested in how villages were built and abandoned.

It's free to visit and accessible year-round, though spring and autumn give you better visibility when the grass is shorter. Allow an hour to properly explore and take it in. The nearest decent base would be Eden Grange Glamping, just under four miles away - a proper spot if you're making a weekend of Durham's rural history.

Worth the detour? If you're already in the area and like piecing together medieval life from field patterns, absolutely. But don't go out of your way specially unless you're genuinely into archaeology. The appeal is subtle, and you need to bring your own interest to the bare earth.
