Coast Artillery School

The Coast Artillery School operated here when Britain feared invasion, training gunners to operate the massive coastal batteries that once protected this stretch of Welsh shore.

History buffs will find plenty to explore among the remaining concrete emplacements and gun positions. The site offers cracking views across the Menai Strait, though don't expect polished visitor facilities - this is more about atmosphere than interpretation boards. What remains are the skeletal concrete structures where soldiers once learned their deadly trade, now slowly being reclaimed by nature.

Families might struggle to keep younger children engaged for long, as there's limited context provided on site. Military history enthusiasts, however, will appreciate the chance to walk among authentic fortifications without crowds or commercialisation getting in the way.

From Llandudno, it's an easy drive to combine with Conwy Castle for a proper day out exploring North Wales' defensive heritage. The proximity to holiday parks like Aberconwy Resort & Spa makes it a worthwhile detour if you're staying in the area, though I'd allow no more than an hour unless you're particularly keen on 20th-century military architecture.
