Coalpit Hill

The walk up Coalpit Hill is straightforward enough, rising just under 500 metres from the outskirts of Appleby-in-Westmorland. You're not dealing with Scafell Pike levels of effort here - more a decent leg-stretcher that takes the better part of an hour depending on your pace and how often you stop to catch breath.

What makes it worth the trip is the view across the Eden Valley once you're up top. On a clear day you can see proper distances - the Pennines roll away to the south, and on your other flank sits the Lake District fells doing their dramatic thing in the distance. The peak itself is unremarkable, honestly. No cairn, no shelter, just moorland and sky. But that's rather the point.

Families with older children will find it manageable. Young kids might get restless on the descent. Walkers and anyone chasing views rather than Instagram moments will rate it - the crowds are virtually non-existent compared to the honeypot fells further west. Go on a settled afternoon in late spring or early autumn for best light and fewer midges.

If you're based at Wild Rose Holiday Park, it's a logical half-day outing that won't eat into a full day's plans. Park access is from footpaths near the town and costs nothing. Bring decent boots - the ground gets boggy in places - and water. The summit isn't dramatic, but the walk itself, and what you see from up there, justifies the effort. Proper Pennine fell country.
