Coalhill Coppice

The woodland around Coalhill Coppice is proper old-growth forest - the kind where you can actually hear yourself think. Beech and oak dominate, with enough undergrowth to feel like you've stepped properly away from civilisation, yet it's only a short drive from Malvern.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. The trails wind through genuine woodland rather than managed parkland, so expect muddy boots and the occasional fallen branch blocking the path. It's not strenuous, but it rewards you with dappled light and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Gloucestershire in the first place. Kids do well here too - there's enough open space and fallen wood to keep them occupied for a couple of hours, though they won't find play equipment or facilities.

Allow a solid 90 minutes to two hours if you're actually exploring rather than just marching through. Spring and early summer are best - the bluebells are worth timing your visit for, and you'll avoid the worst of the mud. Autumn brings colour but also that slightly neglected feel when leaves pile up on the paths.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Pelerine Caravan & Camping Site, Cwtch Cabins & Camping, or Mike's Meadow Glamping are all within an easy drive - this works brilliantly as a morning walk before heading to somewhere like Symonds Yat for the view. It won't take up your whole day, but it'll remind you that not every forest needs to be famous to be worth visiting.
