Cnocan Donn

The walk up Cnocan Donn isn't long, but it punches above its weight for views. This modest peak sits on the Isle of Arran, and on a clear day you're looking out across the Firth of Clyde towards the Ayrshire coast - proper expansive stuff. The path isn't arduous, which means families with older kids can manage it without too much grumbling, though younger ones might find the final push tedious.

It's a hill rather than a mountain, but that's rather the point. You get real reward for minimal effort. The summit is windswept and a bit exposed, so bring a jacket even when it looks calm down in Arran town. Allow a couple of hours return if you're taking it steady and stopping for photos.

History types will be less impressed; there's no particular story attached to the peak itself, though the island has plenty of prehistoric interest elsewhere.
