Cnoc Odhar

Cnoc Odhar sits just inland from Tain, a modest hill that punches above its weight once you're on top of it. The walk itself is straightforward - nothing mad, but proper rewarding when the weather plays ball. You're looking at roughly an hour up, depending on fitness, and the views sweep across the Dornoch Firth toward the Black Isle. On a clear day it's genuinely excellent.

The reason to come here is the perspective it gives you of the far north coast. From the summit you can trace the landscape all the way to Dornoch and beyond, which makes it a useful waypoint for understanding the lie of the land if you're exploring the Highlands properly. Walkers and hikers will find it satisfying without being gruelling, and it's the sort of thing that makes sense as a morning activity before lunch in Tain.

If you're based at Dornoch Caravan & Camping Park - which is the better-rated option of the two nearby parks at 4.2 stars - Cnoc Odhar becomes a natural add-on to your itinerary. It's close enough for a half-day outing, and the walk clears the head after a couple of days pottering around the caravan site. Free to access, obviously, with no particular restrictions on when to visit. Summer gives you the longest light, but even in shoulder months it's manageable. Not a thunderbolt attraction, but if you're in the area it's absolutely worth the detour.
