Cnoc nan Loch

The walk up Cnoc nan Loch isn't long, but it's surprisingly steep in places - the sort of hill that catches you out if you're not prepared. It sits above Kyle of Lochalsh, and from the summit you get proper views across to Skye and down into the lochs that give the peak its name. The terrain's a mix of rough grass and rock, nothing technical, but your legs will know about it by the top.

This one's best for walkers with a bit of fitness rather than families after a gentle stroll. The views are the main event here - on a clear day you can see for miles, and there's something satisfying about bagging a peak this close to the main road. Most people can manage it in under two hours return, depending on fitness. It's free, naturally, and you can park near the base without fuss.

If you're staying at Reraig Caravan & Camping Skye just up the road, this makes an excellent morning or late afternoon walk before heading back for tea. It's not a destination in itself - you're not coming all the way to the Highlands just for this one - but if you're already in the Kyle of Lochalsh area heading to Skye or exploring the surrounding peaks, it's well worth the climb. The weather can turn quickly here, so check conditions before you set off.
