Cnoc nam Fiann

The walk up Cnoc nam Fiann from near Dingwall is straightforward enough, though the summit itself hardly qualifies as dramatic. You're looking at a modest Highland peak with decent views across the Cromarty Firth towards the Black Isle if the weather plays ball. On a clear day it's worth the effort; on a grey one, perhaps less so.

The path is well-trodden and takes around two hours there and back for most people. It's the kind of walk that appeals to families wanting something achievable without the commitment of a proper mountain, or to walkers using the nearby holiday parks as a base and wanting a quick leg-stretch. Don't expect wilderness or solitude, especially at weekends.

The real strength of Cnoc nam Fiann is how it slots into a broader Highland fortnight. You've got Newmore Highland Pods just four miles away if you're after accommodation with a bit of character, or Blackrock Caravan Park slightly further down the road for something more conventional. Either base gives you access to better peaks in the area if this one doesn't grab you, plus the attractions around Dingwall itself.

Go on a weekday if possible. The views from the top are respectable rather than remarkable, but there's something satisfying about bagging it quickly and moving on to explore the rest of the region. Bring decent boots - it can be boggy underfoot depending on recent weather.
