Cnoc na Cailliche

The walk up Cnoc na Cailliche, just outside Blairgowrie, rewards you with one of those views that makes the legwork worthwhile. It's a modest peak by Scottish standards - nothing dramatic - but the 360-degree sweep across Perthshire from the top is genuinely special. On a clear day you're looking out towards the Cairngorms and across to Ben Lomond. The name means 'Hill of the Old Woman' in Gaelic, and local legend has it that an ancient hag built a cairn up here, stone by stone. Whether that's true or not, there's a proper cairn at the summit now.

Allow yourself about an hour and a half for the round trip if you're a reasonably fit walker - it's steady rather than brutal, though the final stretch does pitch up a bit. Families with younger kids might find it stretches their patience, but teenagers would be fine. The path is well-defined enough that you won't get lost, though after rain it does get muddy. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so bring water and something to eat if you plan to sit and absorb the view properly.

It's the sort of walk that slots nicely into a Perthshire holiday without eating up a whole day. Blairgowrie itself has decent facilities, and if you're basing yourself at Glenshee Glamping - a proper standout spot just 3.8 miles away - you've got somewhere genuinely good to return to. The peak works year-round, though winter can throw weather at you unexpectedly. Go when the sky's clear.
