Cnoc Muigh-bhlàraidh

The walk up Cnoc Muigh-bhlàraidh from Ardgay is straightforward and rewarding - you're looking at maybe 90 minutes to the summit if you're moving at a decent pace. It's not a monster climb, which is precisely why it works so well. The path goes up through proper Highland terrain and the views back down to the Dornoch Firth are the whole reason you're doing it.

This is walker's country, not a Sunday stroll. You'll want decent boots and an eye on the weather - exposure's minimal but the wind can be brisk up there. On a clear day you can see right across to Ben Loyal, which sits about 20 miles away like some sort of postcard waiting to happen.

Families with kids who can manage a hill will get something out of it. The younger ones might find it a slog, though the sense of achievement at the top tends to matter more than the actual view at this age. History buffs won't find much - it's just a working hill in the landscape, no Iron Age fort or standing stones to justify the detour on those grounds.

Free to walk, obviously. No visitor facilities at the top, so take water and something sensible to eat. If you're staying at the Ardgay Glamping site nearby, this fits nicely into a morning or afternoon - close enough that you're not losing half a day to getting there. Worth doing if you're in the area and the weather's on your side.
