Cnoc Mòr

The walk up Cnoc Mòr near Strathpeffer rewards you with proper Highland views without requiring mountaineer credentials. It's a straightforward hill rather than a technical climb, and from the summit you're treated to panoramic vistas across the Black Isle and out towards the Moray Firth. On a clear day it's genuinely excellent.

You're looking at a couple of hours round trip if you take it at a leisurely pace, which most walkers will. The terrain underfoot is boggy in places - wellingtons recommended after rain - but nothing technical. Families with older kids manage it without drama, though younger ones might find the final push tedious. It's the sort of walk where a packed lunch and a flask make all the difference.

Timing matters here. Early morning in summer gives you the clearest light and fewer midges. Avoid the afternoon in winter when daylight disappears by four o'clock. There's no charge and no facilities at the start, so come prepared.
