Cnoc Creagach, dun site

You're looking at the remains of an Iron Age dun - a fortified settlement that would have commanded views across Glen Aray centuries ago. Cnoc Creagach sits on high ground near Inveraray, and what you'll find is mostly stonework now, the defensive walls still distinctive enough to make out the layout of what was once someone's fortress.

It's the kind of place that appeals to archaeology enthusiasts and serious walkers rather than casual visitors. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards spelling everything out - you're working it out yourself from the ground. Allow an hour if you're keen, less if you just want the photo. The walk to reach it isn't arduous, but it's not a five-minute stroll either.

Timing matters here. Summer's better for clearer views, and the midges might be less murderous in spring. Winter rain can turn the approach soggy, though Highland weather being what it is, you could get anything.

If you're based at Glendaruel Caravan Park or Strathlachlan just down the road, this works as a morning activity before heading into Inveraray proper for lunch. It's not the kind of detour that'll eat your whole day, but if Iron Age forts genuinely interest you, it's worth the effort. The views across the glen alone justify the walk - you can see why someone built a stronghold here.
