Cnoc Ceislein

The walk up Cnoc Ceislein from near Dingwall is a proper hill rather than a mountain, but that's precisely why it works so well. The summit sits at 610 metres and rewards you with surprisingly broad views across the Black Isle and beyond - moorland stretches out in every direction, with the sea visible on clear days.

It's not a technical climb. The path from the base is straightforward enough, though the gradient doesn't mess about - you're climbing steadily for most of it. Most people allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on fitness and how long you pause at the top to catch your breath and take in the view. The route starts accessible, which makes it popular with families who want something a bit more substantial than a flat woodland walk but aren't ready to tackle Ben Wyvis or the bigger peaks nearby.

Wear decent boots. The ground gets boggy in places, especially after rain, and the weather can turn quickly even when it looks fine from Dingwall. Summer is best, though the hill has its own appeal in autumn when the light's golden and softer.

If you're staying at Blackrock Caravan Park just outside Dingwall, this is barely a 20-minute drive away. Pair it with a wander around Dingwall itself or head further afield into the broader Highland landscape. The climb itself is free, of course - just park sensibly and go.
