Cnoc a'Chapuill

The walk up Cnoc a'Chapuill is a proper leg-burner, but it's over before you know it. This modest peak on the Isle of Arran rewards you with views that punch above its modest 454-metre height - on a clear day you're looking out across the Firth of Clyde toward the mainland, with Brodick Castle visible below and the water glinting between the hills.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a technical climb, so families with older kids do it regularly and seem to enjoy it without complaint. The real appeal is simplicity: no faffing about with scrambles or exposed ridges, just a decent gradient and decent views. You're looking at maybe ninety minutes up, forty-five down if you're moving at a normal pace.

Walkers heading to Arran typically base themselves near Brodick or Lamlash, both on the east coast where the ferries land. From there it's an easy drive to the trailhead. Kings Caves Glamping sits only a few miles away and makes a relaxed spot to finish the day - the kind of place where you can crack open a proper meal after getting your legs out.

The mountain itself won't test experienced hillwalkers, but that's not really the point. Arran's appeal is that you can knock out several decent walks in a week without any of them feeling like a proper expedition.
