Clwydian Range & Dee Valley National Landscape

The Clwydian Range rises out of Denbighshire like a proper backbone, running north to south with some serious walking country in between. These hills aren't the highest in Wales - that's not what they're about. Instead, they offer something better: accessible ridgelines with views that stretch to the Irish Sea on clear days, and proper valleys that actually feel wild despite being close to Ruthin.

You'll walk moorland and grassland mostly, with Iron Age hill forts dotted along the summits. Moel Famma and Moel Arthur are the obvious targets - nothing too technical, but the paths can be boggy and exposed, so come prepared. Most walks take between two and four hours depending on which peak you're tackling. The Dee Valley itself is worth exploring too; it's gentler terrain with riverside walks and old timber-framed villages that justify a detour.

This landscape works brilliantly for walkers who want something with teeth but not a full day's slog. Families with capable kids will manage the lower routes. History buffs get a kick out of spotting the ancient hillforts. The whole area sits within a National Landscape designation, which means it's protected - you won't find chip shops at the summit, which is precisely the point.

Clwydian Glamping Pods sits just 3.6 miles away and scores five stars, making it ideal base camp. The area demands at least two days to feel properly explored. Spring and early autumn are best - summer brings midges, winter brings mud that doesn't shift.
