Clun Castle

The ruins of Clun Castle sit on a grassy mound just outside the village of Clun, a short drive from Craven Arms. What's left is mainly earthworks and a solitary stone keep - nothing grand, but there's something rather compelling about its emptiness. Built by the Normans to guard the Welsh border, it's now just red sandstone walls and grass, the sort of place where you can actually imagine the medieval traffic of soldiers and merchants.

You can wander around freely, which is the best bit. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no tea room fussing about - just you, the ruin, and the Shropshire countryside. Most people spend thirty minutes poking about, maybe climbing the mound for a proper look at the stonework. Historians and castle enthusiasts will find plenty to interest them; families with young children might get bored unless they're the type who enjoy exploring rough ground. The keep itself is partially accessible, though it's a bit rough underfoot.

If you're glamping in the area - Wild Valley or Offa's Pitch are both close by - it's absolutely worth a morning visit before heading elsewhere. Combine it with a walk around Clun village itself, which is genuinely pleasant, or push on to nearby attractions in the border country. It won't eat up half your day, but it's the kind of stop that reminds you why people actually bother with castles rather than just reading about them.
