Clubmill Reservoir

Water stretches out between steep wooded banks just outside Dronfield, and Clubmill Reservoir is exactly the sort of place you stumble upon and wonder why you haven't been before. It's a proper working water supply for the area, but that doesn't stop it being genuinely lovely to walk around. The shoreline path winds through mature trees with views across the water that shift constantly depending on where you stand - some angles are surprisingly dramatic, others quiet and contemplative.

This works best for walkers and photographers rather than families wanting activities. You won't find a cafe or facilities, so come prepared. Allow an hour for a circuit walk, maybe longer if you're the lingering type. Best visited on a clear day when the water reflects properly and the whole thing feels less like a utilitarian dam and more like something you'd plan a trip around.

If you're camping at Poolsbrook Country Park just a few miles away, Clubmill makes an excellent morning or late afternoon outing. The walk isn't strenuous, the scenery is genuine rather than engineered, and it breaks up a park holiday without requiring a drive anywhere. It's the kind of place that stays with you more than the tourist honeypots do - quiet, accessible, and free from the crowds that choke larger reservoirs. Come when the light is good and you'll leave thinking Derbyshire's quieter corners have their own charm.
