Cloughey Park And Garden

The coastal path winds down toward Cloughey and you'll spot the reserve tucked between the road and the shore - nothing fancy from a distance, but step inside and it opens up properly. This is a working nature reserve where the Ards Peninsula meets the water, and you're walking through restored grassland and scrub that's been carefully managed to bring back the birds and insects.

There's a decent trail system, though nothing taxing. You get good views across the lough on clear days, and the bird-watching is genuinely worthwhile - waders, wildfowl, the occasional rarer visitor if you're lucky. Local walkers use it regularly, which tells you it's solid rather than spectacular.

Realistic about time: allow an hour to do it justice without rushing, maybe ninety minutes if you've got binoculars and the patience for spotting. It's free access, which is always welcome. Best in spring and autumn when migration brings proper variety to what you see.

If you're staying at Silverbay just down the road - about 1.6 miles away - this makes a natural addition to a morning walk rather than a destination in itself. It works well alongside a broader Ards exploration: Newtownards is close enough for supplies, and you're in decent walking country. Worth a stop if you're in the area, but don't rearrange your whole trip around it. The reserve does what it sets out to do without pretending to be something bigger.
