Green Island, Portavogie

You'll spot Green Island long before you reach it - a stubby little rocky outcrop in Portavogie harbour that's more significant to the fishing industry than it is impressive to look at. It sits offshore, accessible only by boat, and serves as a navigational marker for the trawlers that still work from this working fishing port near Newtownards. The island itself isn't really a tourist attraction in the traditional sense; it's genuinely just a rock with some history attached to it.

The appeal, if you want to call it that, is the maritime character of Portavogie itself. This is a proper working harbour - you'll see fishing boats landing catches, nets being repaired, the whole operation still ticking over. Green Island is really just the focal point of that landscape. Photography types find it worth the trip for the light and the working-port atmosphere. Kids might find it vaguely interesting for five minutes, but they won't be scrambling to get closer.

Portavogie isn't somewhere you'd travel an hour to visit on its own, but it sits perfectly into a wider Ards exploration. Both Silverbay Caravan Park and Springvale Holiday Park are within easy reach, making it a natural detour when you're exploring the peninsula's coastal villages. The whole place has a no-nonsense, unpretentious charm - it's not trying to be quaint or cute. Free to view from the harbour side, obviously. Allow 20 minutes to wander and get the photos, then head into Newtownards for actual attractions worth your time.
