Clogwyn Mawr y Ffridd

The walk up Clogwyn Mawr y Ffridd is a proper slog, but the views across Gwynedd make it worthwhile. You're climbing to just over 600 metres, and the path from Blaenau Ffestiniog side gets steep in stretches - nothing technical, but your legs will know about it. What you get at the top is a panorama that stretches across the slate country and beyond. The peak itself isn't dramatic, nothing like the bigger Welsh mountains further south, but it has a quiet appeal.

This is walker territory rather than a casual stroll. You'll want proper boots and at least two hours each way. The terrain is moorland and rough grass, sometimes boggy depending on the weather. In decent visibility you can pick out the surrounding peaks and the valleys that make North Wales so distinctive. On a misty day - which is common up here - it's rather atmospheric, though you won't see much beyond a few hundred metres.

If you're staying at Llechwedd Glamping at Plas Weunydd, you're only a few miles out, making this a natural half-day excursion. It's the sort of walk that suits couples or small groups who like a bit of exertion without needing technical kit. Families with teenagers who've done some hill walking will manage it, but younger children will find it tedious. There's no café or facilities on the mountain - take water and snacks. Sunrise or golden hour in late afternoon are the best times to go, when the light catches the landscape properly rather than the flat overhead glare of midday.
