Cloghy Rocks Carpark/Viewpoint

You'll want to pull in here if you're driving through the Downpatrick area and fancy a proper stretch of the legs with a view that actually delivers. Cloghy Rocks is straightforward - a carpark-cum-viewpoint that opens onto countryside rolling away toward the Mourne Mountains. Nothing fancy, nothing overdesigned. Just good sight lines and enough space to let the kids run about without worrying they'll disappear into a gift shop.

The real appeal is that it's genuinely free and takes barely twenty minutes unless you're the type to sit with a flask and brood. Walkers use it as a stopping point between longer trails, but families can duck in between Castle Ward Caravan Park (barely a mile away) or the excellent Silverbay Caravan Park and call it a morning activity. Fair warning: there's not much here in terms of facilities or interpretation boards, so this isn't the sort of place you'd build a day around.

Where it works is as a break in a wider loop - Downpatrick itself has enough of interest to occupy a few hours, and if you're based at Buckshill or Delamont Country Park nearby, this is a natural waypoint that costs nothing and saves you driving further afield. Come on a clear day if possible. The views are decent, but they're not dramatic enough to justify the trip in murk.
