Clitheroe Maze

The maze sits in a proper Lancashire setting just outside Clitheroe, and it's the kind of place that works best if you're not expecting too much. It's free to wander through, which is the main selling point - you get a decent half-hour puzzle without opening your wallet. The paths wind through natural woodland, and on a good day the whole thing feels like a genuine forest walk rather than a theme park attraction.

Families with younger kids will get the most mileage out of it. Adults tend to solve the thing in 20 minutes and then wonder what to do next. There's no cafe, no gift shop, no facilities - it's just the maze itself. If the weather's decent and you've got children aged 5-12 who enjoy a bit of spatial thinking, they'll be entertained. Bring a map or go in blind - the challenge is half the point.
