Clifton Wood

Ancient woodland on Essex's eastern edge, Clifton Wood is a proper walk through the sort of forest you don't often find down south - tall oaks, beech, and sycamore creating genuine canopy cover rather than the scrubby bits you get elsewhere. It's genuinely quiet. You'll find yourself on narrow paths that feel genuinely remote despite being only a few miles from Ipswich.

This is walkers' territory. The terrain's uneven, roots everywhere, so trainers won't cut it - proper boots needed. Plan on a couple of hours to explore without rushing, though you can do shorter loops if you're just after a quick stretch of the legs. The wood's got real character: dappled light, the sound of it, that smell of leaf mould. Kids will either love the adventure or lose interest once they realise there's no obvious trail or attractions.
