Cliff's Rough

Dense woodland and rocky outcrops define this rough patch of forest just outside Stafford - it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. The terrain is properly rugged with exposed stone breaking through the leaf litter, and the paths wind between ancient trees without any pretension whatsoever. There's no visitor centre, no café, no manicured trails. Just forest as it actually is.

This is ideal territory for walkers who want something real rather than a theme-park version of nature. Kids will love scrambling over the rocks and poking about in the undergrowth, though you'll need proper footwear - the ground's uneven and can be waterlogged. A solid hour here is enough to feel like you've had a proper walk without it becoming a full-day commitment.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn work best. Summer can feel a bit claustrophobic under the canopy, and winter's muddy as anything. The nearest proper base is Stafford itself, though Fledgling Farm campsite sits just 5.5 miles away and offers a more rural option if you're making a weekend of it. From there, it's an easy drive to squeeze in some woodland time.

Worth a visit if you're in the area? Absolutely, but manage your expectations. This isn't a destination attraction - it's a genuine escape valve from Stafford's town centre. The sort of place that reminds you why forests matter.
