Clifford Water Lakes

Two artificial lakes sitting just outside Bideford, Clifford Water is the sort of spot you stumble upon rather than plan for - which is exactly why it works. The lakes themselves are calm and reflective, flanked by woodland that gives the whole place a surprisingly peaceful feel given you're only minutes from town.

It's walkers and birdwatchers who'll get the most from this one. The paths around the water are straightforward enough, nothing too demanding, and there's genuine wildlife activity if you're patient. Bring binoculars and you'll spot waterfowl without much fuss. Kids won't be bored, though it's not a destination in itself - more of a pleasant half-hour diversion if you're already in the area.

The real appeal is how it fits into a broader North Devon holiday. You're camped at Roeys Retreat or one of the other spots nearby, and this fills a gap between beach days. It's free, accessible year-round, and doesn't demand much from you beyond a willingness to take a walk. The woodland is decent for autumn colour if you're visiting then, and spring brings migrants that birdwatchers specifically travel for.

Don't expect facilities beyond car parking. Bring a flask if you want a brew. The paths are well-maintained enough but can get muddy after rain, so proper footwear matters. It's the sort of place that reveals itself slowly - you'll likely prefer it more on a second visit than the first.
