Cliff Wood

The woodland floor at Cliff Wood is thick with leaf litter, soft underfoot after rain, and the whole place has that proper hushed feeling you get when trees close in around you. It's a genuine working forest in the Lincolnshire countryside near Newark - not manicured, not trying too hard, just woodland doing what woodland does.

Walks through here are straightforward enough. You're threading between established trees with decent sight lines, so you won't feel hemmed in, though it's dark in winter. The paths are manageable for families with older kids, though there's nothing dramatic or visitor-centre slick about it. This is the kind of place where you turn up, have a wander for an hour, and move on.

It works brilliantly as a leg-stretcher if you're staying at Wagtail Country Park just down the road - that's only 5.4 miles away and a proper spot for a family base. Janson Fishery is another option nearby if you're after something quieter. Both give you quick access to these woods without needing to plan an elaborate outing.

You won't find opening hours or admission fees listed anywhere official because that's not how it works - it's just woodland you can walk into. Spring is lovely if the bluebells come through, though honestly, any season works if you're after fresh air and a bit of green space. Go if you're in the area and need to burn off some energy, but don't rearrange your holiday around it.
