Cley Marshes

The moment you step onto the raised bank at Cley Marshes, you understand why birdwatchers travel hours to stand in the wind with binoculars. This is proper Norfolk - vast, windswept, and genuinely wild. The marshes stretch for miles, a patchwork of reed beds, shallow pools, and grazing areas that shift with the seasons and the light.

What makes Cley special is the sheer density of birdlife. Spring and autumn migrations bring rare visitors alongside the everyday redshanks and avocets. Winter is quieter but rewarding if you're patient. You're not climbing hills or queuing for facilities - this is a working nature reserve managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, so it demands a different kind of attention. Bring binoculars, a good coat, and realistic expectations about the weather.

Non-birders might find an hour here sufficient; dedicated twitchers easily spend half a day. The footpath is mostly flat but exposed, and there's little shelter. Free to access, though donations to the trust are worthwhile. A network of trails runs along the water's edge and through the reserve itself.

East of Holt, it slots perfectly into a Norfolk coast trip. Kelling Heath Holiday Park sits just 3.9 miles away, making it an easy morning visit before heading to Cromer or Sheringham. The landscape feels properly remote despite being minutes from civilisation - which is exactly the point. Not for everyone, but unmissable if you care about birds or want to see what undeveloped Norfolk actually looks like.
