Clerk's Orls

You'll find yourself walking beneath ancient oaks and chestnuts at Clerk's Orls, a proper woodland just outside Ledbury. It's the sort of place where you actually notice things - gnarled tree trunks, dappled light on the forest floor, the smell after rain. The woodland covers a decent chunk of ground and works as a genuine escape from the town rather than a manicured park experience.

Walkers get the most from it. The paths wind through mature forest, nothing too demanding, and it's the kind of spot where you can spend a couple of hours without seeing many other people. Kids will enjoy it if they're the type to stomp through undergrowth and hunt for sticks rather than expecting playground equipment. Older types interested in the landscape will find it worthwhile.

Based near Ledbury, it slots nicely between the camping sites scattered around the area - The Millpond and Hereford Camping and Caravanning Club Site are both within a couple of miles. If you're camped at any of them for a few days, this breaks up the schedule without being a major expedition. The forest itself feels genuinely old in the way Herefordshire woodland does, the kind of place that's probably been here far longer than anyone can remember.

Bring proper boots if it's been wet. The paths aren't maintained to death, which is rather the point, but it means mud collects. Allow a couple of hours if you're exploring properly rather than just passing through.
