Clearbury Ring

You're looking at one of Wiltshire's quieter Iron Age hill forts, about three miles south of Salisbury. Clearbury Ring sits on a chalk ridge with concentric earthwork rings that still command the landscape properly - walk the perimeter and you'll trace the defensive ditches and ramparts that once protected an entire community. The views across the Avon Valley are the real draw here. It's genuinely peaceful, which makes sense given how few people find it compared to Stonehenge or Old Sarum just down the road.

Walkers will love this. The site itself is free and open access, though it's not manicured - you're scrambling through gorse and grass, navigating slopes that get steep in places. Allow forty minutes to an hour to do it justice, longer if you want to sit and soak it in. The ramparts are substantial enough that archaeologically-minded types will spend time working out where the gates were, how many phases of construction happened here. Kids might flag after twenty minutes unless they're into climbing on ancient earthworks.

Visit in autumn or winter when the chalk outlines read better and you're not overheating. Summer means long grass obscures the detail. If you're based at Summerlands Caravan Park or Salisbury Campsite at Bake Farm - both within three miles - it's an easy morning excursion before tackling the major monuments nearby. It works well as a contrast to the crowded scheduled sites: this is archaeology as it feels, not as it's been packaged.
