Claypotts Park

The path down to Claypotts Park winds through mature woodland before opening onto a proper working landscape where water management and wildlife coexist. It's a nature reserve that doesn't shout about itself - no visitor centre, no cafe, just the Tay estuary stretching out and birds you'd struggle to name doing their thing in the reeds.

What you're actually walking through are areas managed specifically for ground-nesting birds and wetland species. In spring and early summer the activity is relentless - warblers, pipits, and if you're lucky, the odd osprey heading upstream. The reserve works because locals and the land trust have kept it understated. No crowds, no tannoy announcements, just you and whatever's living here.

Allow a couple of hours for a proper wander, longer if you're serious about birdwatching. The footpaths are straightforward but can get muddy, so proper boots aren't optional. Summer visits work better for spotting nesting activity, though winter brings migrating wildfowl worth the walk in cold weather.

Tayport itself is small and unremarkable, but it's perfectly positioned if you're basing yourself at either Tayport Links Caravan Park or Larick Campsite - both rated highly and just a few miles away. This isn't a destination in itself, but if you're already camping nearby and want an afternoon out with binoculars, Claypotts delivers without the fuss of bigger reserves. Families with patient kids will manage it; those expecting playground facilities should look elsewhere.
